Columbia Group opens up in Istanbul | Crewing Assistance

The Columbia Group has underlined its commitment to the burgeoning Turkish maritime cluster by opening an office in Istanbul.

CSM Turkey will be headed up by Capt Ozgur Gunes and overseen by Xanthos Kyriakou and Johann Meyer from the Italian and German offices respectively.

The new office will offer the full spectrum of the Columbia Group integrated maritime services with diverse support to all its stakeholders as well as full ‘second party’ technical and crew management services. CSM Turkey will offer essential vessel digitalisation and optimisation services through Columbia’s much heralded Performance Optimisation Control Room (POCR), in addition to training, catering and newbuilding consultancy. It will also act as a valuable springboard for the new entity’s expansion into the luxury aviation, super yacht, and cruise management sectors in Turkey.

Tanker pool management is also available through UPT, as well as mental health and crew wellbeing services through One Care, while Columbia Finance can provide stakeholders in the Turkish market with the necessary project equity.

Ministry and sea ports move to expand shore power | Offshore Jobs

The Ministry of Infrastructure is allocating €140 million over the next few years to help realise shore power plants in sea ports. A further €40 million will be added from the climate fund. By allowing moored vessels to ‘plug in’, polluting diesel generators on the ships do not have to run while noise pollution is also reduced.

Minister Mark Harbers (Infrastructure and Water Management) signed a letter of intent with the Branch Organisation for Seaports (BOZ) on Monday, setting out public-private agreements on the roll-out of shore-based power.

With the forthcoming Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Regulation (AFIR), European ports will be required to supply so-called AFIR vessels with shore power from 2030. These include container ships, cruise ships, passenger ships, and combined passenger and cargo ships from 5,000 GT (gross tonnage, indicating the size of a vessel). These are all large vessels, which also consume a lot of energy at the quay.

To meet the climate targets, it is essential that all sectors do their part, including the maritime sector,’ minister Mark Harbers said. ‘At the same time, this requires huge investments. I am glad that with this subsidy scheme, we can lend a helping hand to the sector and will further encourage the installation of shore power. This will not only result in environmental gains, but also to fewer noisy generators on vessels moored at the quay. It will hopefully also free up space for development in the ports as well as new climate projects.

COSCO SHIPPING to Build the Second 700 TEU Electric Container Ship | Jobs On Ships

On May 8, COSCO SHIPPING Heavy Industry (Yangzhou) started to build the second 700 TEU electric container ship (N998) owned by COSCO SHIPPING Development, in the presence of the shipowner, ship survey authority, maritime department, and shipyard.

The 700TEU electric container ship is a key project of COSCO SHIPPING Development to support the campaign of “carbon peaking and carbon neutrality” for the demonstration of green zero-carbon shipping.

Powered by portable container-sized batteries, the ship is a 10,000-DWT specific route river/coastal ship with an LOA of 119.8 meters, a molded beam of  23.6 meters, a designed draft of 5.5 meters, and two 900kW main propulsion motors, making it the most prominent electric container ship in the world.

Compared with conventional fuel ships of the same size, it can reduce carbon emissions by about 32 tons per 24 hours.

The ship is also equipped with an intelligent ship platform system and a domestically advanced situational awareness system, which will significantly improve the level of intelligence and safety of the vessel.

Port of Newcastle commits to global hydrogen partnership | Ocean Job

Port of Newcastle has today joined forces with ten global energy enablers to commit to the Platform Zero Global Partnership for Hydrogen Innovation – a collaborative global partnership to support hydrogen innovation.

CEO Craig Carmody and Chief Commercial Officer Simon Byrnes, who are visiting the Netherlands for the World Hydrogen Summit, signed a Memorandum of Understanding under supervision of the Dutch Minister for Foreign Trade and Development, to accelerate the renewable energy transition with Platform Zero, Port of Rotterdam, the City of Rotterdam as well as key Universities and Innovation Hubs from around the world.

“We are delighted to be collaborating with such a strong cohort of leaders in this space and to be a leading voice for our sector and region as the only Australian Port represented among these global energy industry enablers,” Port of Newcastle CEO Craig Carmody said.

“This partnership is another milestone of our diversification strategy. It puts Port of Newcastle at the table alongside like-minded global leaders in the sector, enabling us to work together to develop and scale innovative hydrogen technologies and overcome key bottlenecks to enable the hydrogen and clean energy transition and trade pathways.

“As we work to bring our Clean Energy Precinct to reality, the benefits of this virtual global innovation hub will be exponential, allowing our Port and Region to learn from international Ports, researchers and clean energy producers, whilst contributing to the development of the Innovation Road Map that will enable a global hydrogen economy,” he added.

Chief Commercial Officer Simon Byrnes said that partnerships like these will be key to the future enablement of a scalable clean energy trade pathway at Port of Newcastle.

Global freight shows signs of bottoming out | Ocean Job

Global freight volumes fell at some of the fastest rates for three decades earlier this year, but at the end of the first quarter showed signs of bottoming out.

Volumes were down by -2.1% between December and February compared with the same period a year earlier, according to the Netherlands Bureau of Economic Policy Analysis (“World trade monitor”, CPB, April 25).

The rate of decline was in the 8th percentile for all overlapping three-month periods since 1992; volumes have only fallen this fast during the last three recessions in 2020, 2008/09 and 2001/02.

Reflecting the global slowdown, the U.S. rail network hauled 1.06 million containers in February, the lowest for the time of year since 2015 and before that 2012, data from the Association of American Railroads showed.

Global freight has been hit by excess inventories held all along the supply chain as consumer and business spending has reverted from merchandise to services after the pandemic.

Persistent inflation, rising interest rates and increased fears about an impending recession have also encouraged households and firms to be more cautious about spending.

Scorpio Tankers doubles Q1 revenue | Offshore Jobs

Scorpio Tankers announced a strong set of first quarter results, doubling its revenue and returning to profit in the first three months of 2023.

Profit of $193.2m in the first quarter 2023 compared to an $84.4m loss in the same period last year.

Time charter equivalent (TCE) earnings at Scorpio were $377.2m in the first quarter, up by $205.1m compared to the $172.0m recorded in Q1 2022, despite a drop in the average size of the fleet from 129.3 vessel in Q1 2022 to 113.0 in Q1 2023.

First quarter average daily TCE earnings on the spot market were $47,356 for LR2 tankers, $34,616 for MRs, and $38,349 for handymaxes while time charters were $29,887 for LR2s and $21,637 for MRs.

For the second quarter so far, earnings were marginally stronger in all segments and voyage types, except for a slight softening of handymax spot/pool rates.

Commenting on the market, Scorpio said the increased earnings reflect a market improvement that began at the end of the first quarter 2022.

“Initially, the easing of COVID-19 restrictions around the globe, the conflict in Ukraine, and strengthening refining margins resulted in significant increases in ton-mile demand as trade routes shifted and volumes increased,” said Scorpio.

More recently, easing restrictions in China and increased sanctions on Russian oil have supported the market, accelerating a trend of increased demand for transport of refined oil products while the orderbook remains near record lows.
