SEA-LNG coalition calls on IMO to regulate all GHG emissions on a full lifecycle basis | Our sea world

Clear and consistent regulation is key to driving maritime decarbonisation. With this in mind, and ahead the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) 80th Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC 80), industry association SEA-LNG calls on the IMO to regulate all greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from shipping, including carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide on a full lifecycle, Well-to-Wake, basis. IMO regulation should be goal based and technology neutral with the ambition of achieving convergence between global and regional measures.

At MEPC 80, the IMO is set to revise its Initial Strategy on the Reduction of Greenhouse Gas Emissions from Ships. The revised strategy will contain concrete GHG reduction targets for the sector and is expected to outline a basket of technical and economic measures to be developed to set global shipping on an ambitious path towards aligning with Paris Climate Agreement targets.

Methane emissions associated with the use of LNG as a marine fuel, in particular methane slip in engine combustion cycles, is a topic that has the maritime industry’s complete attention. The industry has made great strides to reduce methane slip on a voluntary basis. Engine technologies already exist with virtually no methane slip, and for those low-pressure engines where it remains an issue, continuing innovations by engine manufacturers have resulted in levels of methane slip falling four-fold over the past 20 years. Further, specific programmes have recently been set up with the aim of addressing methane slip, such as the Methane Abatement in Maritime Innovation Initiative (MAMII) and the Green Ray project. Furthermore, upstream emissions of methane are being addressed by a number of United Nations (UN) and industry initiatives. The highest profile of these is the Global Methane Pledge (GMP), launched at COP26 in November 2021 to catalyse action to reduce methane emissions.

New Sail Device for Ships Developed by Eco Marine Power

After several years of research & development (R&D) Eco Marine Power (EMP) announced today that it has developed a new type of sail device for ships. This sail device known as a SailetTM (patent pending) can increase the propulsive forces created by EMP’s patented EnergySail® and can also be used as a stand-alone sail-assisted propulsion or energy-saving device. Additionally, it can be used as a modification to the EnergySail® so that this will be better protected during cargo operations and during storms. Computational fluid dynamics-based (CFD) studies have also shown the orientation of this device can be adjusted to alter the forces on a sail thereby acting as a form of load control, especially when linked to the computer-based automation & control system that EMP has developed with several strategic partners.

Regarding the development of this latest energy-saving device, Greg Atkinson, President & Chief Technology Officer at Eco Marine Power commented, “Our focus at Eco Marine Power has consistently been on developing innovative energy saving & renewable energy-based solutions for ships. The Sailet is an example of this and also our continued focus on R&D and our work to expand our portfolio of patented designs.”

UN chief calls for acceleration of Black Sea grain deal exports | Our sea world

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called for an acceleration of Black Sea grain shipments from Ukrainian ports under a deal allowing safe wartime exports, a U.N. spokesperson said on Tuesday as Russia threatens to quit the pact next month.

The United Nations and Turkey brokered the Black Sea Grain Initiative with Russia and Ukraine in July 2022 to help tackle a global food crisis worsened by Moscow’s invasion of its neighbor and blockade of Ukrainian Black Sea ports.

But food exports “have dropped significantly from a peak of 4.2 million metric tonnes in October 2022 to 1.3 million metric tonnes in May, the lowest volume since the Initiative began last year,” said deputy U.N. spokesperson Farhan Haq.

Guterres was disappointed by a slowing pace of ship inspections and the exclusion of Pivdennyi (Yuzhny) port – one of three Ukrainian ports covered by the Black Sea export deal.

“The Secretary-General calls on the parties to accelerate operations and urges them to do their utmost to ensure the continuation of this vital agreement, which is up for renewal on 17 July,” Haq said in a statement.

Russia’s President Vladimir Putin said last week that Russia was considering withdrawing from the Black Sea grain deal.

Archaeologists Plan to Raise Ancient Hand-Sewn Vessel off Croatia | Marine Mantra

Marine archaeologists are preparing to raise a hand-sewn boat dating back over 3,200 years from the bottom of the Mediterranean Sea, off the coast of Croatia. Raising the vessel will allow for extensive studies of the incredibly well-preserved wreck.

During the first week of July, a team of French and Croatian researchers intends to recover the wreck of the Zambratija boat, a vessel type that is believed to have defined regional shipbuilding between the 12th and 10th centuries BC. The boat, which is the oldest entirely hand-sewn boat ever found in the Mediterranean, has withstood the test of time: seven meters of its original 12-meter length are still remarkably well preserved. It represents a rare example of the ancient shipbuilding tradition of Istria and Dalmatia, two regions on the Croatian coast.

The French National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS) will be undertaking the project in collaboration with the Archaeological Museum of Istria in Pula, Croatia. The task is bound to be delicate since the boat is made from pieces of wood that were intricately sewn together using flexible fibers.

Hundreds Feared Dead in Migrant Boat Sinking Off Greece | Offshore Jobs

About 104 people have been rescued, 78 have been confirmed dead and hundreds more are missing after a large migrant vessel capsized off the southern coast of Greece.

The vessel was underway on a voyage of illegal migration from Tobruk, Libya to Italy. On Tuesday morning at about 0800, the Italian rescue authorities contacted the Hellenic Coast Guard to report the movements of the migrant boat. The Greek agency reports that it offered assistance, but that the migrant vessel declined help and said that it wanted to continue onwards to Italy.

At 1217, it issued a distress signal, and a merchant ship responded to the scene. The good samaritan ship passed over the water, but the migrant boat’s operator expressed concern that the situation could deteriorate with fights on board and navigated away from the responding ship.

A Hellenic Coast Guard vessel monitored the migrant boat from a distance from 1940 hours onwards. At 2240, the migrant boat reported that its engine had failed. Less than half an hour later, at 2304, it capsized and sank at a position about 50 miles off the Peloponnese. About 100 people were pulled from the water and transferred to shore at Kalamata. According to the Hellenic Coast Guard, none had life jackets.

The evolution of technology has pushed the boundaries of logistics. While the business world has changed and grown, it has also resulted in more supply chain complexities and lead to a larger impact on the global climate. That’s why Maersk and Microsoft are expanding their existing relationship to accelerate Maersk’s digital transformation and to further digitise logistics.

The main objectives are to identify and explore collaborative opportunities to drive digital innovation and decarbonization in logistics.

A partnership to elevate technology in logistics

Maersk is looking to develop state-of-the-art solutions to accelerate and modernise collaboration and processes, and to create value for its customers and employees. The companies intend to work together to strengthen their global strategic relationship across 3 core pillars:

Maersk will boost its cloud-first technology approach by expanding the company’s use of Microsoft Azure as its main strategic cloud platform. The cloud backbone enables Maersk to build scalable platforms to cater for organic and inorganic growth, supporting the Maersk transformation strategy. Further, the use of machine learning and data analytics will enable Maersk to gain greater ‎insights and support new ways of working.

Euro economic misses may mask pandemic reboot | Maritime Union Of India

Even if some yearn for pre-pandemic familiarity after three years of global economic disruption, the euro zone may not want or need to go back there.

One of the biggest questions in world markets is just how durable the changes wrought by COVID-19 – and the compounding energy shock that followed Russia’s invasion of Ukraine – will be on economic behaviour, growth and inflation around the world.

There are usually two camps – one assuming an eventual return to a slow-growth square one; another sketching a volatile world of higher inflation, borrowing costs and ‘geo-economic’ realignment.

Policymakers still battling the related inflation spike and debt piles say it’s too early to tell. And this week’s World Bank update described the global economy as still ‘hobbled’ by three years of shocks and with its outlook still ‘precarious’.

Bond fund giant Pimco’s five-year view talks of a possible end to an era of “volatility-suppressing policies”, leaving markets in for a bout of “heightened volatility” and aftershocks.

Tankers: VLCCs Face Another Quiet Week | Merchant Marine Jobs

LR2

MEG LR2’s have suffered from relatively little activity this week, exacerbated by a short week in Singapore. Freight levels have been level with TC1 stable in the mid WS140’s and a trip west on TC20 dipped $178,000 to $3,942,000.

West of Suez, Mediterranean/East LR2’s look to have taken a similar trajectory to the MEG. TC15 is currently pegged at $3,066,667 following a $3,250,000 deal failing and $3,100,000 widely reported on subjects.

LR1

In the MEG, LR1’s have taken a small hit similar to their larger sisters. TC5 dropped 12.86 points to WS147.14 and a TC8 voyage heading west shed $250,000 to $3,008,000.

On the UK-Continent, TC16 held flat at WS134-135 but due to the bunker prices the Baltic TCE has ticked over the $25,000 /day round trip.

MR

MEG MR’s have been retested down again this week. Subsequently the TC17 index has dropped from WS296.43 to WS272.86. At these levels the run is still returning a Baltic TCE of $34,000/day round trip.

UK-Continent MR’s showed good momentum this week. Both TC2 and TC19 climbed 15 points to WS197.78 and WS208.57 respectively off the back of less available tonnage.

USG MR’s saw market direction return downward this week following a short week after Memorial Day activity has been limited. TC14 came off 32.5 points to WS145.31 and TC18 dropped 38.34 points to WS272.86. A run to the Caribbean on TC21 took a $190,000 (20%) hit down to $735,000.

The MR Atlantic Triangulation Basket TCE dropped from $36,010 to $32,121.
