Call to action on Fuel EU compliance | Marine Mantra

The EU’s FuelEU Maritime regulation, set to take effect in January 2025, looks set to further shake up the industry, as it continues on its path to net zero. As part of the EU’s Fit to 55 package, FuelEU aims to accelerate the decarbonisation of maritime operations through increasingly stringent emission targets and penalties.

A briefing note from Norton Rose Fulbright partner Philip Roche and client knowledge director Kelli Bodal Hansen states that there is “much for shipowners and operators to consider” on FuelEU. “There is a misconception that the EU ETS is a charterers’ problem and FuelEU is an owners’ problem,” they say. “But the position is more complex than this and FuelEU compliance is an issue which owners, charterers, ship managers and others will all have to face in the coming months.”

The regulation clearly states that the Document of Compliance (DOC) holder is solely responsible for FuelEU compliance. This places a significant burden on ship managers, who may have limited control over operational decisions affecting emissions.

Shipowners, charterers, and ship managers must carefully review their contracts to address FuelEU compliance.

A Record September And All-Time Best Quarter At Port Of Los Angeles

The Port of Los Angeles handled a record 954,706 Twenty-Foot Equivalent Units (TEUs) in September, a 27% increase over the previous year. It marked the close of the busiest quarter ever at the Port, which processed 2,854,904 TEUs in the last three months.

Nine months into 2024, the Port of Los Angeles is 18% ahead of its 2023 pace.

“Just as impressive as these new records is the fact that we managed all this cargo with skill and efficiency,” said Port of Los Angeles Executive Director Gene Seroka. “None of this would be possible without the incredible efforts of our longshore workers, truckers, terminal and rail operators, and other supply chain partners. Their hard work has allowed us to achieve all these records and still be able to handle additional volume.”

Matt Shay, President and CEO of the National Retail Federation, joined Seroka at today’s media briefing. Shay discussed the impact of the East and Gulf Coast labor disruption on retailers as well as supply chain trends for the fourth quarter.

Port of Long Beach Sees Strongest September on Record | Sea Vessel Jobs

Demand for holiday-related goods nudged the Port of Long Beach to its most active September and busiest quarter on record as shippers continued to move goods ahead of a labor contract deadline for seaports on the East and Gulf coasts that resulted in a three-day strike at the start of October.

Dockworkers and terminal operators moved 829,499 twenty-foot equivalent units last month, up just 70 TEUs from the previous record set in September 2023. September also marked the Port’s fourth consecutive monthly year-over-year cargo increase. Imports increased 2% to 416,999 TEUs, exports declined 12.8% to 88,289 TEUs and empty containers moving through the Port rose 1.5% to 324,211 TEUs.

“We have plenty of room across our terminals as the peak shipping season drives a record amount of cargo through this critical gateway for trans-Pacific trade,” said Port of Long Beach CEO Mario Cordero. “We are anticipating continued growth through the rest of the year as retailers stock the shelves for the winter holidays.”

“Our ability to work with industry and workforce partners allows us to move large volumes of cargo reliably, quickly and sustainably,” said Long Beach Harbor Commission President Bonnie Lowenthal. “Additionally, we continue to deliver strong customer service to meet the needs of consumers and the national supply chain.

US sanctions on Iran to tighten China crude flows, raise shipping costs | Merchant Navy Jobs

The latest US sanctions on Iran, in response to its missile attacks on Israel, are expected to tighten crude flows to China and reduce the competitiveness of these barrels due to a shortage of ships and higher shipping costs in the near term, Chinese refinery and trade sources told S&P Global Commodity Insights on Oct. 14.

These sanctions, along with worries about further measures, if the Iran-Israel conflict escalates, could create prolonged uncertainty for China’s independent refiners, the biggest customers for Iranian crude, leading them to consider alternative supply options.

“Most of those vessels shuttled to China with Iranian barrels,” said a Shandong-based trade source with knowledge of the Iranian flows to China.

A Shandong-based independent refiner said sanctions complicate financing for affected cargoes, as “no bank will dare to handle cargoes shipped by a sanctioned vessel.”

In September, about 30 vessels loaded with Iranian crudes were discharged for China’s independent refineries, according to Commodity Insights estimates based on various market sources. Among these, six vessels were on the latest US sanctions list.

“With 23 vessels being sanctioned at one go, it is going to be challenging for dealers to find alternative carriers and redo administration works,” said Sijia Sun, associate director for downstream research and analysis at Commodity Insights.

Fincantieri: “Star Princess” launched in Monfalcone | Rig Jobs

The launch of “Star Princess,” the second LNG (liquefied natural gas) cruise ship that Fincantieri is building for Princess Cruises, took place today at the Monfalcone shipyard.

The ceremony was attended, among others, by John Padgett, President of Princess Cruises, and Cristiano Bazzara, Director of the Fincantieri shipyard in Monfalcone. Godmothers of the ceremony Chiara del Vecchio, 3rd Engineer aboard the “Sun Princess”, and Francesca Maraventano, executive assistant at the Monfalcone shipyard.

With a gross tonnage of approximately 178,000 tons, “Star Princess” is the sister ship to “Sun Princess,” also built in Monfalcone and delivered earlier this year. It is the second-largest ship ever built in Italy and the second LNG-powered cruise ship Fincantieri is building for this ship owner. Additionally, it is the second dual-fuel ship, primarily powered by LNG, to join the Princess fleet. Liquefied natural gas is considered the most advanced, mature, scalable, and commercially viable fuel technology for the maritime industry. It is also recognized as one of the cleanest fossil fuels, as it reduces greenhouse gas emissions and mostly eliminates other airborne pollutants and particulate matter.

“Star Princess” is the second ship in Princess Cruises’ Sphere class, with delivery expected in fall 2025. The new vessel will accommodate approximately 4,300 passengers and is based on a next-generation platform design.

Princess Cruises is a globally leading cruise line operating a fleet of 17 modern ships, transporting millions of guests each year to 330 destinations worldwide.
