Marcura acquires HubSE, expanding demurrage automation across all cargo types

Maritime technology leader Marcura has acquired HubSE, the UK-based pioneer in oil and chemical tanker demurrage claims automation. This strategic acquisition positions Marcura as the first commodity-agnostic provider of demurrage solutions, marking a major step forward in simplifying demurrage claims for shipowners and charterers.

HubSE’s specialised oil and chemical tanker expertise will be integrated into Marcura Claims (formerly ClaimsHub). Their combined capabilities will deliver a comprehensive claims management experience with both fully managed and self-service solutions.

“Managing demurrage claims has often meant juggling different tools, processes, and providers depending on the cargo,” said Henrik Hyldahn, Group CEO, Marcura. “Bringing HubSE into the Marcura ecosystem changes that. For the first time, shipowners and charterers have a single solution that covers all major commodity types. This is about giving them confidence that, no matter the variables in play, the claims process is not something they’re going to have to worry about.”

Founded in 2009, HubSE has earned recognition for mastering the complexities of tanker demurrage, where contract intricacy and cargo variability make claims particularly challenging. Their technology is widely recognised as the gold standard for efficient cost recovery in this specialised sector.

Trump seeks to reshape Asia’s energy supplies with US gas | Cruise Ship Jobs

When President Donald Trump sat down to lunch with his Japanese counterpart this month, talk turned quickly to how Tokyo could help realise a decades-old proposal to unlock gas in Alaska and ship it to U.S. allies in Asia.

Trump and his energy tsar Doug Burgum framed the venture as a way for Japan to replace Middle East energy shipments and address its trade imbalance with the U.S., according to two officials briefed on the closed-door talks.

Japanese premier Shigeru Ishiba – eager to ensure a positive first meeting and stave off damaging U.S. tariffs – struck an optimistic note about the Alaska LNG project despite Tokyo’s doubts about its viability.

Ishiba told Trump and Burgum that he hoped Japan could participate in the $44 billion project, said the officials, granted anonymity due to the sensitivity of the talks.

Trump repeatedly mentioned the project in his public remarks after the lunch. Ishiba did not, and there was no reference to it in the official readout of the talks.

Reuters interviews with more than a dozen people, including current and former U.S. and Asian officials, show how the Trump administration is moving to recast economic relations with East Asia by binding regional allies to Washington through increased investment in American fossil fuels, particularly LNG.

Sustainable Ship Management: Navigating the Green Future | Rig Jobs

Sustainability aims for long-term co-existence on Earth, focusing on environmental, economic, and social dimensions. Often, the environmental aspect is highlighted, addressing issues like climate change and biodiversity loss. Current climate change, characterized by global warming, stems from human activities such as fossil fuel burning since the Industrial Revolution.

In the maritime industry, there is a responsibility to reduce emissions from various activities. The shipping sector faces an increasing demand to decarbonize and lessen its greenhouse gas (GHG) footprint due to multiple global and regional regulations and commercial sustainability requirements. With the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) latest Greenhouse Gas strategy and its aim to achieve a carbon-neutral shipping industry by 2050, vessels are expected to meet progressively stricter Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII) targets each year.

The European Union has already incorporated shipping into the European Emissions Trading Scheme (EU ETS), significantly impacting vessels’ operational costs. Additionally, the IMO is expected to introduce global carbon taxation schemes within the next few years, which will further affect financial implications. The life cycle (well-to-wake) emissions intensity of fuels used on board will become a critical factor for vessels’ GHG performance. This development is driven by the ongoing work on the Life Cycle GHG Assessment (LCA) framework by the IMO, alongside compliance targets set by Fuel EU Maritime, which will take effect in 2025.

Drone strike hits Chevron, Exxon oil exports via Russia

A drone strike has hit a pumping station on a oil pipeline in Russia, reducing flows from Kazakhstan to world markets pumped by Western firms including Chevron CVX and Exxon Mobil XOM, its operator said on Monday.

The strike comes a day before U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio is scheduled to meet Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in Saudi Arabia for talks on ending the war in Ukraine.

The operator, the Caspian Pipeline Consortium (CPC), said drones struck the Kropotkinskaya station in the southern Krasnodar region, where work was halted to investigate the damage.

It said seven drones were involved in the strike, which it called an act of terrorism. It did not specify that the drones had come from Ukraine.

However, an official at Ukraine’s SBU security service said that Kyiv had hit the pumping station and nearby Ilsky oil refinery using drones.

Pilot project Hull Vane and Total Energies big success | Merchant Navy Jobs

Hull Vane and TotalEnergies conducted a pilot project by installing a Hull Vane® on one of the company’s chartered Fast Support Vessels (FSVs) in order to reduce the CO2 emissions. Following successful sea trials, which confirmed the predicted savings in fuel consumption and CO2 emissions, and having used the Hull Vane® for several months in operation, TotalEnergies confirms the fuel saving of 11% in general.

The pilot project was done on Ava J McCall, a 59m (194 ft) Fast Support Vessel owned by Seacor Marine, and designed by Incat Crowther. The vessel is in operation in West-Africa, transporting goods and personnel to the oil fields offshore Nigeria. Ava J McCall is powered by five waterjets, with a combined propulsion power of just over 10.000 kW. Hydrodynamic studies at Hull Vane showed that the Hull Vane® would save around 10% in fuel consumption at the ship’s typical operating speeds of between 15 to 25 knots. The Hull Vane®, built in the Netherlands, was shipped to Ivory Coast where it was installed during Ava J McCall’s scheduled maintenance period in late 2022.

The Naval Architects of Incat Crowther USA took care of the structural integration of the Hull Vane®. The Hull Vane® is placed underneath the waterjets, and does not increase the draft, the beam or the length of the vessel. Upon completion, DP trials showed no effect on the Dynamic Positioning Capabilities of the vessel, which has DP-2 notation.

Russian energy official says US sanctions should not hinder oil trade with India

U.S. sanctions on Russia should not affect Moscow’s oil trade with India, Pavel Sorokin, Russia’s first deputy energy minister, said on Tuesday, adding that it was too early to assess the impact of the latest restrictions.

India became the top buyer of Russian sea-borne oil sold at a discount after Western nations imposed sanctions on Moscow and curtailed their energy purchases in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

Last month, Washington imposed fresh sanctions targeting Russia’s oil supply chain, causing tanker freight rates to soar as some buyers and ports in China and India steered clear of sanctioned ships.

“Our relationship with India is based on economic pragmatism,” Sorokin told the India Energy Week conference.

“We believe energy trade shouldn’t be hindered by any politics,” he said.

Sorokin said it was too early to measure the impact of the latest U.S. sanctions.

“You cannot judge about the situation on the basis of a few weeks of data. More time is needed to assess these things, but we believe that constructive relationships will continue to be successful,” he said.

Russian supply to India fell in December and January from levels in the preceding six months.

Indian Oil Corp IOC, the country’s top refiner, flagged last month that it is facing a potential drop in its Russian oil imports this fiscal year ending March 31, following the latest U.S. sanctions on Moscow.

Advancing Maritime Digitalization: POC about Shipdex-D and Shipdex-F together | Rig Jobs

The Shipdex protocol, as already known, consists of two specifications derived from international aerospace and defence standards: S1000D (www.s1000d.org) and S5000F (www.s5000f.org).

Shipdex-D (technical manuals) and Shipdex-F (in-service maintenance data feedback) are designed to work together and provide the following benefits:

For manufacturers: the ability to provide customers with technical manuals (maintenance plans, catalogues and more) in a structured, standardized, and mandatory electronic format (Shipdex-D).

• For customers: the ability to import manufacturers’ data in Shipdex-D format into their ERP and Maintenance Systems, and to export in-service maintenance data feedback in Shipdex-F format.

Data in Shipdex-D and Shipdex-F formats can be merged into a database, providing customers and suppliers with a standardized way to analyse how, when, and what results are achieved when performing maintenance tasks onboard different ships.

Hapag-Lloyd says it can cope with U.S.-China tariffs | Maritime Crew

Container shipping liner Hapag-Lloyd will be able to cope with the advent of U.S. tariffs on Chinese products, its chief executive told reporters on Tuesday.

“It is too early to push the panic button,” CEO Rolf Habben Jansen said in the remarks published on Wednesday, when additional 10% tariffs kicked in, and made before U.S. President Donald Trump proposed that his country to take over the Gaza Strip.

“Fortunately we are able to react when transport flows change,” he said, adding foreseeable events were easier to handle than the unexpected ones, such as the Red Sea crisis when the Iran-backed Houthi militants launched attacks on vessels passing the Suez Canal in November 2023.

The tariffs imposed by Trump on China so far should not change the flow of goods too much, said Habben Jansen, who heads the world’s fifth-biggest container company. In Trump’s first term between 2017 and 2021, he also applied tariffs but global trade had developed well nevertheless, said Habben Jansen.

Asia Fuel Oil: Hi-5 Crunches To Narrowest In More Than Five Years | Rig Jobs

Asia’s hi-5 fuel oil spread crunched to its narrowest in over five years, based on LSEG data, as the market for very low sulphur fuel oil (VLSFO) continued to weaken, while high sulphur fuel oil (HSFO) strengthened.

The hi-5, which reflects the premium of VLSFO over 380-HSFO, fell below $76 a metric ton for the February contract at the Friday close, LSEG data showed. The spread was last narrower in December 2020. (FO05-380SGMc1)

HSFO has retained its strength ever since sanctions clouded the supply outlook. The prompt-months backwardation for both 180-cst and 380-cst grades widened above $10 a ton on Friday, compared to about $8 before the holidays.

In contrast, VLSFO has pared due to high inventories and an adequately supplied market in the short term. Spot VLSFO traded softer on Friday for loading dates between late February and early March, based on data from industry sources.
